Technical information on yarns

Yarns come in 1 kg cones.

Hircus Filati's fine yarns are produced by the best Italian spinning mills and are specialized products that boast entirely Made in Italy production.

Our yarns are packaged in cones of various weights. Each yarn available on our website indicates the weight, size, count, and the recommended needle and/or hook size and/or machine or loom gauge to use, so you know how much yarn you need for your project. It is advisable to always provide a 10x10 cm swatch before making the final project.

There are two categories of yarns on our website: our own production yarns and stock yarns. The latter are sold at less than half the price you would find in a normal store.

The needle or hook size and/or knitting machine indicated for any type of yarn are for standard processing; the size may vary slightly depending on the type of project and the knitter's tension.

The yarn count will give an idea of the thickness and length of the yarn. For example, an Nm 4000 yarn will have a length per kg of 4000 meters and 100 grams of 400 meters. An Nm 2/28 (2/28000) will have a length of 14,000 meters per kg (28000:2 = 14000 meters).

However, please note that it is not that simple. Cashmere, camel, alpaca, yak, and extra-fine merino yarns are very delicate and precious. Each type of yarn, depending on its composition, count, and craftsmanship, requires a different type of processing.

The search for new patterns and new processes for cashmere, camel, and yak yarns, and new yarns, is the goal that sets us apart as a company specializing in fine yarns. It is hard work involving research and much experimentation with washing, dyeing, and yarn processing to achieve the desired results. In addition to the obvious desire for high-quality products in rich and subtle colors, another priority is to offer a wide variety of yarns suitable for any type of processing with a wide range of possible effects. We want a yarn that works exceptionally well with knitting, crochet, machine knitting, and weaving.

With Cashmere, Camel, and Yak yarns, we wanted to present products that have successfully worked in a wide range of colors and processes. To do this, we carefully considered the composition. The factors involved are:

The quality of the natural material.
The softness
The spinning process
The final yarn processing

All these factors are fundamental to the performance of the products. All these things must be considered as a substitution of one yarn for another. It's simple, you cannot expect the same results using different yarns to make the same project.

Note: Please keep in mind that all wool yarns contain moisture, and the yarn can be affected by humidity and temperature. If you leave the yarn in a dry and warm place, it will lose moisture, which, besides being bad for the yarn, will make it lighter, thus affecting its length and weight. Conversely, if it is kept in humid conditions, it will absorb moisture and become heavier.
